MUSIUM IN YOGYAKARTA

Jogja has plenty museums to visit. Mostly are dedicated to some independence hero or military escapade and, rarely, famous artists. If you care to observe what life should be in the old Jogja, some of them are worth visiting.

Sono Budoyo Museum.
Inaugurated in 1935 by the Dutch’s Java Institute, it has a first rate of Javanese arts, including puppets, kris (traditional dagger) and batiks and the outside courtyard is packed with Hindu Statuary. It’s opened from 8 am to 2.30 pm daily except Monday.
Royal Horse Cart Museum. Situated between the Kraton’s entrance and Sono Budoyo Museum, it holds 18 opulent chariots of the sultans. It’s open from 8 am to 2.30 pm daily and admission fee is 3000 rupiahs

Museum Hamengku Buwono IX (HB IX)
is a 4 rooms museum inside the Kraton complex to commemorate the late father of the present Sultan HBX. It displays private possession of the Sultan and a set of replicas of royal paraphernalia.

Fort Vredeburg
is an old Dutch fort which houses a museum with dioramas showing the history of the independent movement. Nowadays is a popular place to organize art and crafts exhibitions.

Ullen Sentalu Batik
Museum houses a collection of the entire range of royal dresses of the Palace from past to present. Located at kaliurang, some 28 kilometers north of Jogja.

Museum Sasana Wiratama.
Also known as Monument Diponegoro, built to commemorate the bitter revolt of Prince Diponegoro (1825-1830) against the Dutch at Jogja. A motley collection of the prince’s belongings and other exhibits are kept at a small museum built at the site of his former residence.

Affandi Museum,
located at Jalan Solo, was the home and studio of the late Affandi, a painter of internasional fame. Two main buildings, to keep some of affandi’s works and his daughter Kartika’s paintings, have unique roof design modeled out of banana leaves and beatifully stands on the bank of the Gajah Wong river.

COMPLEKS PRAMBANAN TEMPLE

Prambanan is complex of Hindu temple built by Sanjaya Dynasty in the 9th century AD. It has three shrines, dedicated to the Hindu Trinity; Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. The main temple, Shiva, soars 47 high is in the inner courtyard and surrounded by several small temples called “Perwara” temples, some of these were contributed by local chieftains as a token of their acquiscence to the king.

Kaliurang lies at the foot of Plawangan hill on the southern slope of mount Merapi, some 28 km, north of Jogja. Since then, the 2,960 meters Merapi keeps to rumble and spew lava down its flank. Climbing and trekking are popular activity and it is possible to climb to a viewpoint to see the breathtaking flows of gleaming lava.

Sekaten CeremonyThe procession of Sekaten Ceremony begins with a parade of royal servants bringing the two sets of royal gamelan named Kyai Gunturmadu and Kyai Nogowilogo to the Grand Mosque (Masjid Agung). The Gamelan are played simultaneously for seven days.
LabuhanLabuhan is an offering ceremony of the sultan of Yogyakarta presented and brought to mount Merapi and Parangkusumo Beach. The offerings includes affod and privates goods of sultan are trown into Indian Ocean.
Tumplak Wajik CeremonyTumplak wajik is a ceremony of wajik making (Wajik, a traditional food mode of sticky rice and palm sugar) in the course of preparing Gunungan for the Garebeg ceremony.
Siraman Pusaka CeremonySiraman pusaka is a ceremony held to clean and purifty the ancient heirlooms such as royal coach, keris (dagger) and lances. This ceremony is sacredly held on the suro month of Javanese calendar.
Tapa BisuTapa bisu is an ascetism ritual by walking around the palace fortress. People walking without speaking, this tradition is held to celebrate Javanese Nyew Year Eve. On the 1st of Suro month.
RuwatanRuwatan is a sacred ceremony for the purpose of warding off misfortune especially for the sucreta (the single child, five children all boys, borned at midday, etc). Betara Kala is the sepicially story of leather puppets show perform in this event.
MasanginThis is tradition to walk with blindholer between two central Banyan tree at the South square (Alun-alun Selatan). There is a belief that ones who could do this, they will grant what they have been wishing.
GarebegGarebeg is a traditional ceremony held by yogyakarta palace reflecting the sultan charity for the people. Garebeg ceremony is annually held on tree different times every year. Garebeg maulud is held on the third month of Javanese calendar commemorating the birth of Muhammad the prophet. Garebeg syawal is held on the Muslem holy day of Idul Fitri. Garebeg Besar is held on the Moslem sacrifice day of Idul Qurban.

SMALL INDONESIAN

He called himself Ngarsa Dalem Sampeyan Dalem Ingkang Sinuhun Kanjeng Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono Senopati Ing Ngalogo Ngabdurrahman Sayiddin Panotogomo Kalifatullah Ingkang Jumeneng Ingkang Kaping Setunggal (I). Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I ruled from 1755 until 1792. during his peroid, the Karaton and basic philosophy of the new kingdom was developed.
Excessive interference of the Dutch rules into the of royal family ignited a revolt known as Java War (1825-1830), led by Prince Diponegoro (Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono III’s son). In the first hal of 20 th century, Yogyakarta was once again a centre of resistance to the Dutch colonization and after the world War II, Yogyakarta became the capital of the revolution (1946 1949) until independence was eventually won.
Today, Yogyakarta is not only synonymous with a centre of culture and art, but also well known as a centre of education.
